Noahide Law allows Jewish astrology, just not pagan astrology

The Noahide Law against "idolatry" includes prohibitions against pagan astrology (here). We have not gotten into much Jewish mysticism on this blog but roughly stated the Jewish religion ingested some forms of paganism in the last few centuries and from this they have produced a book of mysticism called the Kabbalah, which contains within it some concocted forms of Jewish astrology, hypocrisy! One Rabbi in the late 1800's used this Kabbalistic astrology to predict the end of the world in 2017. While the world did not end in 2017, one Rabbi stated that this Jewish astrology also applies to non-Jews who are commanded to follow the Noahide Laws. The modern Rabbi states that if non-Jews do not follow Noahide Law then Jewish astrology will have a negative effect on them. So Jewish astrology is ok, but pagan astrology isn't? Again, hypocrisy!

End of the world: 100-year-old Jewish prophecy predicts eclipse marks APOCALYPSE

THE world is set to end, according to a Jewish prophecy which predicted the disasters Earth is currently facing over 100 years ago.

In 1894, Rabbi Moses Israel Benjamin wrote a book called ‘Yalkut Moshe’ (Collection of Moses) in which he outlined his predictions for the end of the world.

The Rabbi predicted that when the Hebrew month of Elul – which occurs around August/September and lasts 29 days – begins with a solar eclipse then it is a sign of the end times.
A total solar eclipse took place on August 21 and was visible across the United States.
Eerily, another of Rabbi Benjamin’s has come true after he predicted a spate of natural disasters would take place in the wake of the solar eclipse.
In the last few weeks, Hurricanes Jose and Irma have wreaked havoc on the Americas while there have been several earthquakes, most notably the strong 8.2 tremor which struck Mexico on September 7, which add fuel to the Rabbi’s prophecy.
To top this off, the threat of nuclear war still looms over the population of the globe as North Korea continues to build its nuclear arsenal. Earlier this month Pyongyang tested a hydrogen bomb in its most powerful nuclear test to date.
In his 1894 work, Rabbi Benjamin wrote that when Elul begins with a solar eclipse: “It is a bad sign for the other nations, bringing great damage to the kings of the East, and bringing great storms and death to animals.”
One Hebrew Scholar, Rabbi Yosef Berger, the Rabbi of King David’s Tomb on Mount Zion, believes the “kings of the East” refers to North Korea and the current threat Kim Jong-un poses to world peace.
Rabbi Berger told Breaking Israel News: “God put the sun, moon, and stars in the heavens as signs for all of creation to understand His will.
“The nations have to understand that they exist under God’s heaven, and they also have divinely mandated responsibilities.
“They must observe the Seven Noahide Laws, which include the prohibition against murder. If they ignore this commandment, they will suffer.”
Some Christians believe September 23 will be the beginning of the rapture.
By analysing biblical texts and astronomical signs, theorists believe 2017 is the year that Planet X will arrive, and herald the end of days.
Revelation 12:1 says: “A great sign appeared in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun with the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars on her head.“And being with child, she cried out in her travail and was in anguish of delivery.”

This, according to Christian researcher Bob Meade, is proof enough that the end is nigh.
He said: “The great sign of The Woman as described in revelation 12:1-2 forms and lasts for only a few hours. According to computer generated astronomical models, this sign has never before occurred in human history.
“It will occur once on September 23, 2017. It will never occur again. When it occurs, it places the Earth immediately before the time of the Sixth Seal of Revelation.”
As a result, some have combined the predictions of Rabbi Benjamin and the September 23 theory.
One person wrote on God Like Production: “God gave Ninevah 40 days to repent. The eclipse is 33 days before 9/23. Could it be the period of repentance before the tribulation?”

Largest synogue in Portugal is spreading the Noahide code

SIGN THE PETITION

The largest synagogue in Portugal and Spain has begun teaching local residents about the Noahide Laws. Noahide Law requires non-Jews to set up courts to enforce the Noahide Laws (here), but wouldn't mandatory Noahide Law supersede any nation's secular or non-Noahide constitution? Are the Jews of Portugal laying the seeds for what could eventually become a Noahide army of people who would push for the changing of laws to fit the Noahide code? Noahide Law has already been unconstitutionally passed in the United States (here), how long before these laws are enforced?

Rediscovering the Jewish Heritage of Porto, Portugal

The Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue – New York Jewish Travel Guide

The contribution of Portuguese Jews to world history is enormous and its history is inseparable from the Jewish presence in Portugal between the 5th and the 15th centuries. In the northern region of the country are villages, cities and small towns where important Jewish communities once thrived. It would be hard to trace back the arrival of the first Jews in Porto as it is to trace back the foundation of the city. We know for sure during the High Medieval Ages that there were already Jews in Porto, close to the cathedral and inside the primitive walls of the city. Although Porto tolerated its Jewish community and even tried to protect it for many years, the expulsion of the Jews from the country following the infamous Inquisition completely destroyed its Jewish Heritage.

Porto is also Portugal’s second city, home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the country that was spared by the earthquake of 1755 that destroyed much of Lisbon but left Porto intact, including the streets of the former Jewish quarter, narrow streets and balconied houses, with street names such as “Rua Monte Judeus,” “Escadinhas do Monte dos Judeus,” and Pátio das Escadinhas do Monte dos Judeus.” The main synagogue stood on the Escadas da Vitória, a place still locally called “Escadas da Esnoga,” meaning “stairway to the synagogue.” There is a plaque that marks this site.

Nearby, there is an ancient Jewish cemetery at Passeio das Virtudes. It was there that the largest numbers of Conversos (also known as Marranos), descendants of Jews forced to convert to Christianity during the Inquisition but secretly practicing Judaism, lived and in the 1920s Porto was the center of a modest Jewish cultural revival under the leadership of an army captain, Arturo Carlos de Barros Bastos. Basto, a Converso, converted to Orthodox Judaism at the age of 33. He was known as the “Portuguese Dreyfus” and was dismissed from the Army because he was a Jew. After leaving the Army, Captain Basto established a synagogue in Porto. As the synagogue grew he then moved into a new building donated by Elly Kadoorie, a wealthy Sephardic Jew.

The “Kadoorie” synagogue was built on property bought and donated by Baron Edmond de Rothschild of Paris. Basto established a Yeshiva in Porto, which ran for nine years educating more than 90 students. These activities did not go unnoticed by the government, especially after an estimated 10,000 families across Portugal admitted to practicing Judaism in secret. False charges were brought against the Captain and he was court-martialed, stripped of his rank and was forced to close the Yeshiva. The Marrano Renaissance was brought to an end. Bastos left behind a small community almost entirely descended from Conversos and the magnificent Kadoorie Synagogue, the largest active synagogue in Iberia.

The Jewish community today

Every Friday at the start of the Jewish Sabbath, positive murmuring sounds can be heard not only in Portuguese but also in English, French, Spanish and Hebrew, as the community is currently undergoing a rebirth of welcoming Jews who feel threatened in Europe and elsewhere. Dr. Michael Rothwell, a board member of the Kadoorie Synagogue, told NYJTG,“The Jewish Community of Oporto is a community whose membership includes 300 members from all over the world that has been growing from the last three years of only 100 members. The religious Jews and the secular Jews of the Community work together.” He noted that “the vast majority members of our synagogue are either foreign-born or descendants of Europeans who came or Jews who came from other countries during the 20th century. Our oldest member … his father came from Poland in the 40s and we have many families from Egypt, Turkey, France and Israel and from many countries. The community comprises 22 different nationalities, “the largest being French and the fastest growing Israeli,” and “we even have 100 French students from Marseilles studying at the University of Porto for dentistry.”

The Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue is the largest synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula with an impressive blend of Art Deco and Moroccan decor, carpeted inside with Azulejos tiles, typical Portuguese tiles. Its Hebrew name, “Mekor Haim,” means “Source of Life,” while “Kadoorie” is the surname of Hong Kong-born Jews who donated the amount of money needed to complete the building, in honor of a deceased family member, Laura Kadoorie, who descended from Portuguese Jews.

Her husband, Sir Elly Kadoorie, died in 1944 and is still the Honorary President of the Israeli Community of Oporto. Ilan Dahan, a member of the synagogue and chef and soon owner of a new kosher restaurant, Casa de Hummus, told NYJTG, “We have a beautiful and very old one synagogue and we want to keep it like that. More than 80 percent of the synagogue is still original from 1938 … this synagogue survived World World II and we want to keep it like this for many years ahead.”

The congregation includes not only a prayer room, but space reserved for studying, a library, a board room, a community dining room, kitchen, a patio where a Sukkah is built for Sukkot, as well as apartments for the rabbi and the shamash ( a person who assists in the running of a synagogue or its religious services) of the community. There is a ping-pong table in the hallway that keeps young people occupied during Shabbat, as well as a museum on the first floor whose main purpose is to spread awareness of Jewish history and culture as well as the seven Noahide laws that apply to non-Jews; the museum is visited by visiting Portuguese students and non-Jewish tourists from all over the world.

There is a regular minyan and Kiddush every Sabbath. Even though this is not a neighborhood synagogue in the traditional sense, with many synagogue-goers living at a great distance, the synagogue maintains Orthodox practices. Rothwell added that while members include Conservative, Orthodox and Reform Jews, “we are open to the most religious and to the least religious because the least religious also do a lot of work for the community as each of them make their contributions in their own way and that is our key to our success in working together.”

The Porto Rabbinate is recognized by the lsraeli Chief Rabbinate and the Religious Committee is comprised of Orthodox members from Golders Green, London. There is a heated and renovated Mikveh that is in constant use at the synagogue. The Jewish Community of Porto has weekly Torah classes and there is a nursery for children of up to 6 years of age, absolutely free of charge for community members on Sundays

Rabbi suggests opening town meetings with Noahide prayer

SIGN THE PETITION

The law on whether or not it is legal to start a legislative body with a prayer is evolving, but for the time being many town legislatures open, typically with a Christian prayer. In the city of Ocala, Florida, one Rabbis has suggested that the prayer session should be open to other religions, and that the prayer should be suitable for Christians, Muslims, and Jews. The Rabbi says when he makes public prayers he cites the Noahide Laws, laws which would have Christians, among Buddhists, Hindus, and many others,  beheaded (here). The United States Congress has already been opened twice under the auspices of the Noahide Laws (here)

Government prayer: When is it OK?

Experts say there is
a difference between prayer at city and town meetings, for example, as compared to a prayer vigil for which the city of Ocala has been sued.
Before every Ocala City Council meeting, everyone stands. An Ocala Police Department or Ocala Fire Rescue chaplain leads a prayer. The Pledge of Allegiance is recited. Then everyone sits and the meeting begins.

In Belleview, the City Commission holds a moment of silent prayer before people recite the pledge. The same happens in Dunnellon, unless someone volunteers to pray.

Reddick’s mayor leads the prayer at town meetings. In McIntosh town meetings, people recite the Lord’s Prayer. For the County Commission, one of the members leads the prayer.

In May 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Town of Greece, New York vs. Galloway, et al. that legislative prayer was constitutional based on historic precedent. In previous decisions, the nation’s highest court decided prayer in this limited context could coexist with the principles of disestablishment and religious freedom.

Prayers at legislative meetings, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the opinion, serve to “lend gravity to public proceedings and to acknowledge the place religion holds in the lives of many private citizens.”

“The principal audience for these invocations is not, indeed, the public but lawmakers themselves, who may find that a moment of prayer or quiet reflection sets the mind to a higher purpose and thereby eases the task of governing,” Kennedy wrote.

Further on in his opinion, Kennedy wrote, “The analysis would be different if town board members directed the public to participate in the prayers, singled out dissidents for opprobrium, or indicated that their decisions might be influenced by a person’s acquiescence in the prayer opportunity.”

The law on this issue is still evolving — with several cases working their way up to the Supreme Court — which leaves questions about its breadth.

The city of Ocala has no official policy as to who is allowed to guide prayers at meetings. Chaplains usually rotate the duty. Sometimes the chaplains provide overarching prayers that touch on universal themes. At least once this year, a chaplain recited the Lord’s Prayer.

Who will lead the prayer is decided before meetings and is printed on the agenda.

At least three other city boards include an invocation on meeting agendas, according to city agenda records.

Some interpretations of the May 2014 Supreme Court decision claim prayer is allowed at government meetings because the town of Greece, New York, reached out to other religious leaders to offer them an opportunity to lead prayer and they declined. Others argue there is no requirement to reach out to other religions, said Frayda Bluestein, the David M. Lawrence Distinguished Professor of Public Law and Government at the University of North Carolina’s School of Government.

“I believe that everyone should always affirm to a higher authority at the beginning of anything,” said Rabbi Yossi Hecht, of Chabad Lubavitch Jewish Center of Ocala, The Villages and Tri County.

Hecht said it is important to recognize the higher power and that humans are not making decisions on their own. He advocates for a moment of silence at school for children to pray or meditate. He thinks the prayer at Ocala City Council meetings should be open to different religions.

He suggests saying a prayer that is universally accepted for at least these three main religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

Adults in Florida are slightly more religiously diverse than the southern United States as a whole. Seventy percent of adults in Florida are Christians, according to Pew Research Center data. That is 6 percentage points less than the South combined. Three percent of Florida adults are Jewish and roughly 1 percent are Muslim. In the South as a whole, Jewish and Muslim adults represent 1 percent of the population each.

Hecht said he understands that Ocala is a mainly Christian community, but said a more universal prayer provided by various religious leaders would not be hard to accomplish.

For example, he said, when he leads public prayers he speaks to the seven Noahide laws, which include do not kill, cheat, steal or curse God.

“I believe those laws are given to all mankind,” Hecht said.

The Star-Banner attempted to reach representatives of both the Islamic Center of Ocala and Masjid Darul-Islam of Ocala several times via phone calls or emails over multiple days, but was not able to connect with anyone.

The Rev. Donald J. Curran Jr., of Christ the King Anglican Church, said it does not matter to him who prays at the beginning of meetings. He said that prayer has a historic place at government meetings.

“The connection between faith and government agencies is nothing new,” he said.

But to what extent religion and government can mingle is still being determined in the court system. The city of Ocala, its police chief, and its mayor — at one point — have been involved in part of that process.

A federal lawsuit filed in November 2014 by a group of Marion County residents came to a recent semi-permanent end in favor of the residents. Federal Judge Timothy Corrigan entered an order in May ruling that the city and Ocala Police Chief Greg Graham violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment by organizing, promoting and holding a prayer vigil in September 2014.

Corrigan awarded the three plaintiffs — Art Rojas, and Lucinda and Daniel Hale — $1 each from both the city and Graham.

The vigil was held after a crime spree in Ocala. The purpose, attorneys for the city and police chief have argued, was to encourage residents to speak with the police to help bring justice to victims.

“In sum, under the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, the government cannot initiate, organize, sponsor, or conduct a community prayer vigil. That is what happened here,” wrote Corrigan, a judge for the U.S. District Court of the Middle District of Florida.

The Establishment Clause refers to the first 10 words of the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”

Attorneys for the city and Graham have since filed a motion to vacate the judge’s summary order, stating the plaintiffs alleging the violation have no standing. They add that steps taken after the filing to ensure an event like the prayer vigil does not occur again makes the case moot.

Bluestein, who had not read Corrigan’s order, said there is a difference between religious invocations at the opening of government meetings and vigils. The religious invocations, she said, were in practice when the Establishment Clause was conceived and adopted.

Unlike legislative prayer, a “long tradition of government-sponsored prayer vigils does not exist,” said Darren Hutchinson, associate dean for faculty development at the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law. Hutchinson teaches and has written about constitutional law.

Hutchinson, who read Corrigan’s opinion in the case, said the prayer in the federal suit is distinguishable from legislative prayer.

“In fact, officials in the case admitted that they came up with the novel idea in order to combat a perceived crime problem,” he wrote in an email. “Also, this was not simply a short prayer that was the prelude to an otherwise secular meeting. Instead, the prayer was the totality of the event.”

Curran attended the prayer vigil in question and said it brought the community together and was interracial and inter-denominational. While he thought the vigil was good, he said, in general, the government shouldn’t put on religious events. Hecht said he did not know enough about the vigil to comment.

Corrigan cannot comment on cases with outstanding issues, according to one his law clerks.

The judge ordered last week that the Marion County residents would have until Aug. 31 to respond to the motion to vacate, according to court records. They have not yet done so.

Court shut gay conversion program re-opens as Noahide center

The Noahide Law against "improper sexual relations" includes homosexuality (here), and under Noahide Law non-Jewish homosexuals would be killed. JONAH was a Jewish run gay conversion scam which was shut down by court order in the state of New Jersey for false advertising, they claimed their methods could cure homosexuality. Well now JONAH has re-opened as the Jewish Institute for Global Awareness (JIFGA), and rather than focusing on homosexuality they will be focusing on spreading awareness of the Noahide Law against sexual immorality. It was the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) that filed the original suit against the organization and they have filed a second lawsuit against JIFGA because it is nothing more than a total transfer of JONAH's assets and founders.

Jewish ex-gay organization JONAH was ordered by a New Jersey jury to shut down conversion therapy operations in 2015. The order came after a jury came to a unanimous verdict that the group was guilty of consumer fraud for advertising treatments that supposedly ‘cured’ a gay person. In 2018, the Southern Poverty Law Center has filed a new complaint that JONAH is up and running again under a different name.

Just a few days after the court ordered shut down, JONAH reached out to its supporters, announcing that it was creating the Jewish Institute for Global Awareness (JIFGA) which would provide education on the Noahide laws, including the prohibition “of immorality and forbidden sexual relations.” The ‘new look’ group still has the same co-directors in Arthur Goldberg and Elaine Berg. It has the same office and the same phone number as JONAH.

Anti-gay conversion therapy group defies court order

The complaint from the Southern Poverty Law Center exposes how JONAH continues to operate despite the court ordered shut down. This is in violation of New Jersey’s ban on conversion therapies. When the SPLC sent inquiries to JIFGA, they admitted all JONAH assets had been transferred to the new company. The transfer includied bank accounts and referrals with conversion therapy providers. JIFGA also continued to promote conversion therapy, with Goldberg offering himself as reference for Orthodox Jewish mental health professionals. He providing JONAH’s e-mail and phone number as point of contact. JIFGA also hid its workings behind a crowd-funding group called “Funding Morality.” The group gives access to those it feels are denied rightful access to other such groups.

Funding Morality’s projects include a series of videos promoting and explaining “reparative therapy” for homosexuals. It also uses a documentary about Joseph Nicolosi who is considered the founder of the ex-gay therapy movement. The project uses a memoir by ‘former homosexual’ David DeJacomo who testified on JONAH’s behalf in 2015.

JIFGA has also partnered with the National Task Force for Therapy Equality, which submitted a report to the Federal Trade Commission. In it they claim those who have gone through conversion therapy see a shift in their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Superior Court Judge Peter F. Bariso, Jr., who heard JONAH’s case three years ago, refused to allow such evidence to be allowed in court, saying, “the theory that homosexuality is a disorder is not novel but — like the notion that the earth is flat and the sun revolves around it instead — is outdated and refuted.”

In the wake of the ruling in 2015, the court awarded $3.5 million in attorney’s fees and costs to the plaintiffs. The actual amount agreed upon has not been made public. However, now that JONAH has been found to be violating the permanent injunction, the SPLC is asking for the remaining balance of that settlement to be paid out.

Jewish journalist infers Muslims, but not Christians, are Noahides

SIGN THE PETITION

The Jewish Babylonian Talmud claims Jesus was a blasphemer and a sorcerer, no matter what anyone says, yes, under Noahide Law Christians are idolators for worshiping Jesus Christ as god (here). But what about Muslims? Muslim scholars as the Al-Azhar (Egypt) Muslim University have been generating theology which says Islam is already acceptable under Noahide Law and would not need to change very much at all (here), and there are Rabbis from Israel who agree (here). In 2016 a Jewish journalist named Rebecca Abrahamson obviously inferred that Muslims but not Christians would be acceptable under Noahide Law when she stated that Islam is strictly monotheistic (like Noahidism), but Christians have the trinity, which Islam views as polytheism, and the worship of Jesus as god as idolatry. The fact of the matter is that Jewish Noahidism can team up with Islamic Sharia, and they can work together, but Noahidism cannot accommodate Christians. Christians will be put to death by Noahide approved Sharia if these Rabbis get their way, or at least that is the rumor! In the USA Noahidist Jewish lawyers have been making arguments for how already established American Jewish courts can be used as a rubric for giving Sharia law the same status in America (here).

MainOpEdsDr. Omer Salem, A Bridge for Peace?

Dr. Omer Salem, A Bridge for Peace?
An Egyptian Muslim sheikh is on his own peace drive.

Rebecca Abrahamson,

Determined to pursue peace with the Jewish people, Egyptian Muslim sheikh, Dr. Omer Salem, just completed a whirlwind tour of Israel.

He spoke in venues including a Young Ambassador’s high school program, yeshivot in Judea and Samaria, the Jewish Agency, and in a wide spectrum of synagogues and mosques. He was presenting a call for peace based upon scripture, and in this regard could almost be mistaken for a Jewish revivalist, with his call to Jewish people to deepen their attachment to Torah and mitzvot. The closer Jews are to their book, he insists, the more they will be viewed as Ahlul Kitab – people of the book – by Muslims, and the more they will earn respect in the Muslim world.

For some background, Salem attended primary schools in Egypt, his homeland, then studied at Berkeley and Stanford Universities, journeyed to India where he is research fellow at Darussalam University, then onto Yale University where he attained a master’s in religious studies, (still lives in New Haven with wife and kids), then a PhD from Al Azhar University in Cairo in which he defended the Jewish people as “Ahlul Kitab”, or “people of the book”.

Rabbi Yaakov Nagen of the Otniel Yeshiva asked Omer, during his speech there three years ago, “Does their acceptance of your thesis mean a certain amount of agreement?” “Yes, it does,” Salem answered in his mild mannered way. And that amounts to a lot of hope for relations between Muslims and Jews.[1]

As to what motivated him to get involved in Jewish-Muslim rapprochement, Salem sees the Arab-Israeli conflict as central to solving the conflicts in the Middle East. “I have friends and family back in Egypt, I want them and my people to be at peace and to prosper, and I see making peace with the people of Israel as key.” He has condensed his proposals in his new book, The Missing Peace, the Role of Religion in the Arab Israeli Conflict.

He holds that any solution in the region must be based upon scripture, both Torah and Qur’an, as this is what ultimately unites Muslims and Jews both theologically and historically. ”Read!” he insisted to the students at the Young Ambassadors high school program, Petach Tikvah, “check out the sources for yourselves!” “This really impressed me” one student remarked, and the idea that Islam can indeed support a Jewish state was new information to them.

Salem demands recognition by Muslims that Jews are people of the book and deserve the respect and protection of Muslims. Once this is established in the Muslim psyche, all else falls into place – Jews are no longer “kafr” – heretics – but coreligionists. He brandishes the Qur’anic verse 49:13: "O Mankind! We created you from a male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you might come to know each other." And 5:48 “To each among you (Muslims and Jews) have We prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues.”

Dr Salem regards this verse as invoking multi-covenantism – Jewish law for the Jews, Islamic law for the Muslims - a teaching demanding more than mere tolerance, but actual acceptance of the other faith community.

Dr Salem emphasizes that the Jewish people's loyalty to Torah will enhance their reputation in the Muslim world, for people of the book must indeed follow their book. He boldly stated at his speech at the Jewish Agency that Muslims will actually help the Jews build their Temple once they see the Jewish people as loyal to Torah.[2]

Salem’s profile is rising; his visit was reported in Olam Katan, Ma’ariv, Israel HaYom, and the Jerusalem Post. Not everywhere was he received so kindly; in fact he was harshly heckled and philibustered for five full minutes during his presentation at the University of Haifa, shouted down by an Arab student who identifies with the Communist party. The student had to be forcibly removed from the auditorium. Omer simply quipped with his trademark even keel, “that student does not like religion and he does not like peace.”

An Example to Other Muslim Moderates, Condemnations of Terror

Few have the talent to be a total lone wolf. You wonder to what extent Salem represents other Muslims, and more so, if it is true that others do share his tolerant vision, where are they? Furthermore, if we are deserving of protection as people of the book, where are the similar Muslim voices condemning terror?

His courage in meeting with Jewish leaders in a conciliatory way has inspired other Muslim leaders to follow suit. He has inspired Sheikh Ahmad Erdowan of Amman, Jordan and Dr Mohammed Al Fiqui of Al Azhar University to become more active in Muslim-Jewish rapprochement.[3]

During his talk at Kehilat Yedidya synagogue, Jerusalem, Salem explained the lack of vocal condemnations of terror from moderate Muslims that we crave. “Moderate Muslims are between a rock and a hard place. If they condemn the terror attacks publicly, they are at risk of being attacked themselves. So in that regard they are scared.” Salem did concede that yes, the moderates do give some emotional support to the jihadis. Muslims world wide feel hurt, they feel downtrodden and frustrated, so when attacks happen, even moderates do not condemn as they otherwise would. It is also difficult for Sunni Muslims to condemn other Sunnis, a certain intra-religious loyalty exists that precludes loud and public condemnations.

I certainly am not satisfied with his explanation concerning the lack of condemnation of terror, and the crowd at Yedidya responded with unified murmurs of protest. And as to being in fear of one’s rulers, and thus voiceless? Omer clearly got a surprise at the crowd, who again together insisted that fear of the government would not prevent them from speaking their mind!

Author and translator Dr Jeff Green of Kehilat Yedidya remarks about Salem's talk, "Omer claims that religion is part of the solution, and that Muslims feel hurt and downtrodden. Yet when a member of our audience countered that there are Muslim sovereign states, Omer responded that none of the Muslim states are truly Islamic. That was a little hard for me to hear. Still, to think he may be bringing other Muslim leaders to visit and possibly teach in Israel is an accomplishment." And Omer received a few hugs and thanks at the end of his talk. “You are a breath of fresh air,” one listener remarked

At his speech at the Jewish Agency, Salem stated that Islam has no theological conflict with Judaism. He notes that Islam does have a long standing dispute with Christianity over two topics. One – the trinity is viewed by believing Muslims as idolatrous. Two - Christians wish to proselytize to Muslims. Judaism is considered strictly monotheistic, and does not call for proselytizing any more than spreading the Seven Noahide Laws, which Muslims already keep.

Both issues are totally absent vis a vis Judaism, and should serve as another point of conciliation. He was asked if Israel were run according to halakha, would it be more acceptable in the Muslim world? Perhaps even be considered a Muslim state? “Yes!” Salem responded unequivocally. It would show the Muslim world that we are truly people of the book. One student said he left the talk feeling inspired and hopeful.

“Falsehood has been spread on both sides. The falsehood on the Islamic side is to say that all Jews are kafr, the falsehood on the Jewish side is to say that Arabs have no place in this land. It has to be replaced with an alternative narrative, and the alternative narrative must be – Jews are Ahlul Ktab and this land is the Holy Land.”

Caliphate

At his presentation at “Tikkun”, hosted by Meir Buzaglo, professor of philosophy at Hebrew University, Dr. Salem emphasized two points: the importance of jihad al nafs (similar to the Hebrew “nefesh” – soul, the struggle for self perfection) and that this is a higher form of jihad than what is unfortunately being waged nowadays - jihad al sayeef - the struggle of the sword. He invites Muslims to favor what is considered in Islam the higher and more difficult path of ongoing self improvement.

His second point - Muslims are dreaming of a worldwide Caliphate. He declared that in the minds of many Muslims, this is an inevitability and that just like the Jewish people yearned for political emancipation with the Zionist movement, Muslims yearn for a Caliphate. He insists it need not be a threat to the Jewish people, as long as they cleave to Torah and are seen as coreligionists. Efforts such as his thesis at Al Azhar are part of attempts to get the Muslim population to regard the Jewish people in a more favorable light.

“What can we do to ease the situation?” one woman asked. One, cleave to Torah, he said yet again. Two, give a podium to the moderate Muslims (like I am doing right now). “But won’t that just make you appear like a puppet of the west?” she countered. That is a real concern, revealing again the position that moderates are in – their catch-22, between a rock and a hard place. Give them a podium, hear their condemnations of terror and conciliatory overtures, and their own people may just reject them, and worse. Omer has indeed received threats from Muslims who do not appreciate his efforts at normalization.

But Omer Salem is taking that risk. He functions more as a messenger between camps, apparently seeing himself as merely communicating the heart-felt and the inevitable. Indeed there are those who have asked of him to be more preacher than messenger, in terms of condemning terror and in cooling aspirations of political Islam, which certainly are of concern. Can’t he say something to his brethren on these two points? “I cannot stop a moving train,” he can only enhance the status of Jews in the eyes of any future Caliphate, adding that he has never seen a situation in which condemning terror reduces it. [4]

Dr Salem insists that both Jews and Muslims can prosper side by side. They can live and coexist together, it is not a situation in which one side goes up and the other must fall. “Our ancestors prospered in parallel” he declares, “when both sides respected the other. I do not want to rule the Jewish people and I do not want the Jewish people to rule me. We each have our self rule.” And only, he reiterates, when done according to scripture.

Again, he is relaying heart felt messages more than preaching, communicating central concerns between the Muslim and Jewish communities, a role not always popular on either side. But he is, perhaps surprisingly, supporting Jewish observance and revival and bringing more moderate Muslim leaders to the forefront. In this sense he serves as a vital bridge.

This was after the wall had been criticized as an attempt at land-grabbing. Not so, Dr. Salem insisted. “The Israelis see it as necessary for their safety,” he explained. Here is why Jews are allowed to steal from non-Jews under Noahide Law

Under Noahide Law, non-Jews may not steal or commit murder on pain of death, but Jews may steal from and murder non-Jews without earthly penalty (here). Why this biased and unfair legal system? A Jewish literary critic named Adam Kirsch has provided us with the reason why this is, at least according to his knowledge. According to Kirsch, the god of the Jews gave non-Jews the Noahide commandments, but they broke them, so they deserve to have their items stolen by Jews. Another legend is that the Jewish god offered all the people of the earth the Torah, but only the Jews took it, so they are given the privilege of stealing from non-Jews.

Rather than remedy this injustice, however, the Gemara attempts to justify it. According to Abbahu, God “arose and permitted their [the gentiles’] money to the Jewish people.” The reason for this, he explains, is that after the Flood, the sons of Noah received what are known as the Noahide commandments—seven laws that are binding on all human beings, including laws against theft and murder. Because the non-Jewish peoples did not obey these laws, God punished them by allowing Jews to take their property. (Although one might note that the Israelites notoriously failed to uphold their own laws on many occasions.) Rabbi Yochanan gives an alternate explanation, based on the legend that God offered the Torah to all the peoples of the Earth, but only the Jews accepted it. Thus the other nations deserve to have their goods taken by the Jews.

One Law for Jews, Another Law for Gentiles

In this week’s ‘Daf Yomi,’ non-Jews are denied equal protection under the rules of the Talmud

Rabbi: Even Noahides can't be buried with Jews because of the difference in sanctity between Jews and non-Jews

The Noahide Laws set up two sets of law, one law for the Jews, and one law for the non-Jews (Noahide Law). Jews and non-Jews are unequal before the law as a non-Jew only need one victim to their so-called crime of idolatry, blasphemy, or forbidden sexual relations to be put to death, while Jews need two or three witnesses; Jews are allotted more judges than non-Jews (who only get one Judge), also Jews have more legal protections under the laws against theft than non-Jews do (here). Many people have heard that Jews have their own graveyards in which non-Jews cannot be burried. One Rabbi in an article published in the Jewish Press says that this has nothing to do with morality, he says even a non-Jew following the Noahide Laws cannot be buried with Jews, and he says this is because of the difference in sanctity between Jews and non-Jews. Even if you follow the Noahide Laws, you will never be as sacrosanct as a Jew.
